MUSIC Buckley House Showcase Concert Thank you to
the many parents, family members and friends who attended the recent Showcase
Concert. It was a wonderful night of entertainment and there were some very
special performances given. I must make mention of the Year 5 and Year 6
vocal group, which was a group of students who formed specifically for this
concert. They did a great version of the Otis Redding song, “Sittin’ on the
Dock of the Bay”, and it was pleasing to see children who were not choir
members become part of this group. They also gave up some lunch and recess
times to rehearse. A special
thanks to Mrs Fiona Chindamo for her organisation of this concert, plus all
the instrumental staff for their work. Mal Webb Last week,
Prep – Year 6students were entertained by a gifted musician, Mal Webb, who
describes himself as a vocal adventurer, composer and multi-instrumentalist.
I highly recommend Mal’s videos on Youtube, and if you have the chance to see
Mal performing live, you won’t be disappointed. This concert was provided
free of charge by Buckley House Music. Mark

SPORT Girl’s Bat Tennis and Volleyball Zone Semi Finals Both these two
teams have unfortunately bowed out of the Zone Championships recently. The
girls’ Volleyball team lost 2-0 to perennial state finalists Templestowe
Heights Primary School while the Bat Tennis team lost to North Balwyn Primary
School in a close battle. Congratulations to both teams for fantastic
seasons. AGSV Athletics The AGSV
Athletics championships took place last week at the Burwood Athletics Track.
A strong team of 52 athletes represented Buckley House on the day. This is
always a great meet with the other AGSV schools proving to be tough
competitors. However, we still had many top 3 finishes and a few victorious
winners on the day. The highlight being Olivia La Selva in Year 5 who broke
the AGSV Under 10 Discuss record with a throw of 16.22 metres. Dance Both Years 4
and 5 are half way through their jazz dancing routines and will be polishing
up their moves over the next 3 weeks. All four grades from those two year
levels will be performing their dances on the last Friday of term. Stay
tuned. The Year 6
classes started their dance unit last Friday. They will be preparing for a
month to make sure they look smooth and sure footed during their graduation
festivities. Years 3 – Year 5 (before school) School Swim
Squad This squad had
their first session this week. Thirty three swimmers from Year 3 – Year 5
have joined in the program. The squad runs two mornings a week for the last
month of the year. The aim is to develop our swimmers each year for the
following year’s Term 1 swimming championships. As usual the highlight of the
first session was the breakfast afterwards in the new school cafeteria. Coming Up....... ·
Prep - Year 2: The Prep - Year 2 Athletics day will be on
Friday 21 November. The young children will do some preparation and practice
during Physical Education sessions in the coming weeks. It starts straight
after the morning bell, all spectators are welcome. John McInerney Phys Ed./Sports

SCIENCE Term 4 has
found our Year 1, 2, 5 and Prep classes back in the Science room. Prep classes
have been busy carrying out practical experiments to find out more about
plants as part of their Round and Round the Garden topic. The children are
making some wonderful predictions and then testing their ideas investigating
carrot tops, potatoes, celery and gerberas so far. All of their work has been
recorded using a Class Smart board journal. Year 1
children completed their It’s a Wrap topic by posting their packages. They
have since been out into the Olive Garden looking for Mini Beasts as part of
their Schoolyard Safari program, where we will be examining worms, snails and
ants. Children have also been collecting snails for their investigations and
have generated their own conduct of caring for these organisms. Year 2
students have embarked on a separate science topic – Plants in Action. They
have dissected bean seeds and learned the correct parts of a seed. They are
currently investigating which way a up a seed needs to be in order to
germinate and the stages that take place in germination. Year 5 classes
have been exploring the effects of tobacco and the drug nicotine, as part of
their Wise Up – Drug Awareness program. They shall be considering harm
minimisation strategies and will undertake further studies on the effects of
alcohol, including the environment, laws and risk factors that surround a
young person. STAV Science Talent Search: Congratulations
to: Adam Ziogas, Julian Bendler, Jonathon Pickup, Laura Assedumage, Louisa

HOMESTAY
HOSTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS An opportunity
for an enriching and rewarding experience Would you and
your family like to experience being homestay hosts for an international
student? Our homestay placement agency, Student Accommodation Services,
is looking for additional homestays in our area. Families willing to
become involved in this program have the opportunity of getting to know and
understand an international student and his/her culture. Ideally, the
household would be English-speaking and families need to be prepared to
provide quality care and accommodation and a level of supervision appropriate
to a secondary school student. They are quite generously remunerated for
providing this service. For further
information, please contact Lyn
Gilbert, Director of Ivanhoe International (Tel: 9490 3425).
