EDITION 18- 13 November 2008
DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
The male acappella group performing at
the Melbourne Victory Business Event
FROM THE HEAD OF CAMPUS On Friday the 10th
October, the Male acappella group were invited to perform at the Melbourne
Victory Business Event at Central Pier in Docklands. The vocal group who are:
Rainer ANDERSON, James CROW, Adrian CURSIO, Andrew LANGMEAD,
Scott LI, Josiah LULHAM, Sasha SHEKO and Jack VAN STAVEREN, performed a
rousing unaccompanied vocal version of the song “Eye of the Tiger”, before
leading the singing of the Club Theme song, ”Victory the Brave”. This
was well received by the Melbourne Victory club members and players. Congratulations
to all the performers. The
Campus is currently immersed in examinations with Years 9-12 finishing their
final examinations for 2008 and students in Years 7 and 8 finishing their
final assessment pieces prior to the beginning of the Early Commencement
Program. Staff
are busily marking exam papers, writing reports and reviewing curriculum for
2009. A number of VCE staff are also involved in marking the final VCE
examinations for the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Following
the appointment of Nick de Dear to a senior position at a leading independent
school in Adelaide, I am pleased to announce that Ray Grant, the current VCE
Co-coordinator has been appointed to the position of International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Co-ordinator for 2009.
Ray will hold both positions next year. Tickets
for the Friends of Ridgeway Group (FoRG) movie night are selling quickly,
with the prefects actively promoting this event amongst their peers. This
will be the final FoRG event for the year and I look forward to seeing many
families in attendance. Please click on the picture for a booking form.
You can also see a preview trailer here. Homestay Opportunities Would
you and your family like to experience being homestay hosts for an
international student? Our homestay placement agency, Student
Accommodation Services, is looking for additional homestays in our
area. Families willing to become involved in this program have the
opportunity of getting to know and understand an international student
and his/her culture. Ideally, the household would be English-speaking
and families need to be prepared to provide quality care and accommodation
and a level of supervision appropriate to a secondary school student.
Homestay families are quite generously remunerated for providing this
service. For
further information, please contact Lyn Gilbert, Director of Ivanhoe
International (Tel. 9490 3425). Gerard Foley

FROM THE HEAD OF MIDDLE YEARS The
Year 9 students couldn’t hide their enthusiasm on Tuesday 28 October. The
second group had completed their time at La Trobe University and an EXPO was
held at the university to celebrate their work. The program ran as a pilot in
2008. Students attended an initial 2 days of seminars where academics
presented lectures on topics such as Global Warming, Alternative Fuels,
Fighting Malaria, Research into Cancer and an Archaeological history of Australia. The students then
chose a topic they were interested in, and began an inquiry based project. In
2008 the students attended the university fortnightly. They made appointments
to interview the ‘experts’ and then produced a project – there were Power
Points, Movies, Blogs and even footage of backyard experiments. Not only were
the projects impressive, but the manner in which the students could explain
their topics reflected a deep understanding and passion for the topic they
had chosen. This
Expo would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and hard work of Ms
Helen Marotta – Yr 9 Learning Facilitator, Mr Garry Chapman – Director of
Curriculum (Middle Years) and everyone involved in the Year 9 Expo. In
2009 the program has been altered slightly. Each semester the whole of Year 9
will collapse for two weeks, normal classes will cease and students will
rotate through three different special programs; Urban Systems at St Stephens
in Richmond, La Trobe University and an on-campus Life-Skills activity. By
the end of the year, each student will have participated in all three. At the
end of each term there will be a celebration such as the EXPO held this year
and parents, students, family and friends will all have the opportunity to
see what great things are happening at Year 9.
Year 9 Students displaying their
PowerPoint presentations at the Expo Canberra 2008 After
weeks of anticipation, Round Square week kicked off to a great start for the
Year 8’s as we embarked on a long bus ride to Canberra. The boredom of the 10 hour trip was soon
replaced with excitement as we arrived at our destination, keen to check out
the accommodation. As soon as we had thrown our bags into our rooms the
teachers were calling us up for dinner where we met the manager of the
restaurant for the first time. “Two
straight lines, no talking, elbows in, don’t sit there, scrape plates here,
cutlery in that bucket, wipe down your table, push in your chairs...” The
demands were endless, and they were just the instructions for the teachers! Year
8’s woke at the crack of dawn the next morning to a big, fulfilling breakfast
to kick start our day. Excited and energised, we went to all the major
tourist attractions of Canberra. Some of these places included the Australian
Institute of Sport, the High Court, Parliament House and the War Memorial. At
the Australian Institute of Sport we explored all of the facilities as well
as the equipment professional athletes use to train with. We witnessed many gymnasts working through
their routines and some basketball players working out in the weights room. At
the High Court we were shown around by various guides, each giving us the
background of the three court rooms, like when and why they are used. We even
got to see Alice Danby’s great grandfather’s portrait on the wall! Next
was Parliament House where we enjoyed participating in a mock parliamentary
sitting and received a once in a life time opportunity of sitting in on an
afternoon session of parliament and question time. The day we were there was
made even more memorable as it was the day that Malcolm Turnbull became the
new Leader of the Opposition. At
the War Memorial we looked at incredible displays, war memorabilia and
artwork. The dioramas were absolutely amazing! We also visited Questacon, Old
Parliament House, The Electoral Commission, Telstra Tower at night and the
National Art Gallery, where one of the tour guides was so impressed with a
group of IGS students that she enquired as to whether we were from a school
for gifted students. After
four long and exhausting days, our Canberra trip finally came to an end.
Special thanks must go to the wonderful tour guides we encountered at each
venue, the bus drivers, (who should all have navigation systems installed in
their buses before the next trip), and the teachers involved who helped make
this fantastic tour all possible. The
School would like to acknowledge the Australian Governments assistance
through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme in
contributing funding towards the travel costs.

NOTEBOOK INFORMATION EVENING – A
REMINDER
Each year IT
Services holds a Notebook Information Evening to inform our parents about the
School Notebook Program – a notebook computer is a compulsory requirement for
each student in Years 5 - 12. Parents with children whose current notebook
will be out of warranty in January have received a letter inviting them to
attend the evening. The Ridgeway Campus Information Evening will take place on: Tuesday
18 November 7.30 pm at the
Innovation Centre, Buckley House This year we are
pleased to be launching a Tablet PC as our preferred notebook model, and will
also explain the benefits of the service and insurance bundled with the
notebook. We also explain the requirements for parents who might want to
purchase outside the School Notebook Program. Parents who do not receive a
letter, but who are thinking about purchasing a new notebook computer for
their children are warmly invited to attend the evenings as well. I look
forward to seeing you there. Gavin May Director of ICT
